William and Kate visit Academy in Darwen

Prince William and Kate Middleton visited today the Darwen Aldridge Community Academy in Darwen, England.

    some sources were reporting that Catherine has to walk behind William but I see here they are next to each other or she is in front. Can you please explain this protocol?
